Our Guides

"Overall my expedition was excellent! The guides were by far the most approachable
I’ve worked with, always going the extra mile and asking for our feedback.
Our opinions mattered and were taken into consideration."
Rick Sweitzer

Rick Sweitzer created and co-guided the first ever dogsled and ski expedition to the North Pole for amateur adventurers in 1993. Since then he has guided over 10 expeditions to the North and South Poles and another half dozen flights to the North Pole. Rick has been guiding winter mountaineering and ski expeditions for the last 25 years. He is an expert at spinning the "fun meter" and often hosts a "cocktail hour" in his tent at night. He is a legend in the industry and a great companion on the ice!

Annie Aggens

Annie Aggens guided her first North Pole expedition in 2000 and has guided several ski and dogsled expeditions since. She is the author of the Encyclopedia of Outdoor and Wilderness Skills and is in high demand as a lecturer on polar history and expedition travel. She recently founded an organization called ICECAAP to educate people about the effects of global climate change on the Arctic and polar regions.

Keith Heger

Keith Heger is a master at navigating rubble zones and is famous for cooking up mean fajitas. He joined The Northwest Passage as a guide in 2002 and has guided trips all over the globe (though his favorite destination is the North Pole). Prior to joining The Northwest Passage Keith guided ski and mountaineering expeditions for such organizations as The National Outdoor Leadership School.
Dirk Jensen

Before Dirk started guiding North Pole expeditions for The Northwest Passage he led expeditions and travelled extensively in the Canadian sub-arctic. You could say that the Arctic-fever bug bit him hard. People love Dirk for his easygoing personality and his technical knowledge of everything from the pack-ice to the gear that we use.
Ryan Allen

Ryan Allen has been skiing the backcountry since he was a kid. His experience in the extreme cold makes him perfect for the polar regions. He is a first class chef (he's been on the Bobby Flay show on the food channel!) Join him on an expedition and you'll enjoy his easy personality, great stories and excellent appetizers!
Mick Nunn

Mick Nunn joined our team after years of expedition service with the Royal armed forces. He has worked in some of the harshest climates that the world has to offer - and he's got great stories to prove it! Mick makes anyone feel welcome and his quick wit will keep you laughing throughout your expedition.

All Northwest Passage guides are passionate about what they do. Among their top priorities are helping clients to become comfortable self-sufficient. They do this by giving every participant personal guidance and advice hewn from years of experience. From choosing the best equipment to helping you learn to cook a decent meal, they are there to help. You'll find the Northwest Passage guides easy to get along with and eager to share their expertise. Perhaps best of all, they are genuinely invested in making your experience as safe, positive and rewarding as possible.

Skiing to the North Pole
Journal entry #22
"Bitterly cold wind today, but I was able to keep warm and enjoy the incredible Antarctic landscape. At one point the blowing snow blended perfectly with the clouds in the distance, creating the impression that the land and the sky were one.
It was stunning."

"Today we encountered lead after lead after lead. It seemed that the they were acting as guards, only allowing passage
to those willing to search endlessly for a route through
the maze."

dogsledding to the north pole
Journal entry # 5
"The best part of the evening is sitting next to the stove calculating our position. It is amazing how much we can drift during the course of a day. Today we drifted several miles
to the east."

fly to the north pole
Client tip #4
"It's going to be one of the best memories of your life. But believe everything you are told about the cold...at the Pole it is freezing plus! Follow the clothing - gloves and boots recommendations especially -
to a "T". They know! There is
no tolerance for "tough guys."

skiing to the Noth Pole
Client tip # 8
"Be prepared - take matters seriously, but enjoy yourself.
For me the shakedown trip and the expedition gave me the opportunity to escape my world and live a dream. I was in a
land of no phones, no faxes,
no business emergencies - a cold heaven. Based on the trip
I was able to readjust some personal values which have improved my life."
