Join us October 15-31, 2016 as we head to South Georgia Island on a 17-day expedition voyage. Those of you who are historians will recognize South Georgia Island as the remote southern island where famed explorer Ernest Shackleton miraculously landed in his small lifeboat, which led to the rescue of his entire "Endurance" crew who were stranded in Antarctica.
South Georgia's second claim to fame (or first, depending on who you ask) is its phenomenal wildlife. Hundreds of thousands of king penguins, elephant seals and other marine animals and birds populate its shores. Hanging glaciers and rugged mountain peaks are around every corner. It is a photographers dream come true and a paradise for wildlife enthusiasts.
This expedition won Outside Magazine's 2014 Travel Award for outstanding expeditions and National Geographic's 2013 award for 50 Tours of a Lifetime. The icing on the cake is that 2016 is a part of the centennial anniversary celebration of Shackleton's original expedition.
Our voyage will start in Chile where we will fly to the Falkland Islands for embarkation. This eliminates several days of sea travel and allows an opportunity to visit the historic and uniquely British town of Stanley. On board the ship there will be excellent food, professional lecturers, naturalists and a full expedition staff to ensure the best experience.
If you are an active adventurer you may be interested in retracing Shackleton's traverse of the island, which we will be doing as an optional upgrade (previous mountain travel or expedition experience is required). This ski crossing in Shackleton's footsteps will take four days during which time they will leave the ship and travel by ski, camping along the way.
We are updating this page. Please refer to our the Shackleton Crossing itinerary for general route information and check back soon for specific details.
There are two ways to participate in this expedition. You can participate in the Shackleton Crossing (a 4-day ski crossing of South Georgia Island in the footsteps of Ernest Shackleton) or if tents and sled hauling aren't your style you can join the cruise-only which will explore South Georgia Isalnd with shore landings and zodiac cruises with every night spent on board. For the majority of the expedition both groups will be together, only separating for the duration of the 3-4 day crossing.
The Shackleton Crossing is for people who are in good shape, and who are eager to push themselves physically and mentally. The terrain is mountainous and rugged, and weather can change in an instant. Previous experience with glacial travel is required. If you don't already have this experience we can make recommendations for training. Please contact us for more details regarding qualifications and to find out if this is the right adventure for you. To participate in the ship voyage only you must be in good health with a eager sense of adventure. Please contact us for additional information here.
Includes voyage aboard the designated vessel as indicated in the itinerary; All meals throughout the voyage aboard the ship including snacks, coffee and tea; Free use of rubber boots; Pre-scheduled group transfer from the vessel to the airport in Ushuaia (directly after disembarkation); All shore excursions and activities throughout the voyage by Zodiac; Program of lectures by noted naturalists and leadership by experienced expedition staff; All miscellaneous service taxes and port charges throughout the program; Comprehensive pre-departure material.
