The Uphill Battle Begins

Ski crossing of Vatnajökull

The Expedition Iceland team had a fantastic day on the glacier today. Since their encounter with blustery winds ended two days ago, the weather has been ideal.

Today the team put the last miles of flat glacier behind them and have begun the ascent toward Öræfajökul. All told, the team covered 12.5 miles (20 kilometers) and ascended about 1000ft (305 meters) today. As they ascended, they pushed through layers of fog and clouds and at the end of the day had a relaxing dinner outside their tents before Annie serenaded everyone to sleep with her guitar. Take a moment to listen to John's message to experience the splendor of Iceland's high alpine beauty through him.

If travel goes well tomorrow the team may make a summit run in the afternoon. Otherwise, the plan will remain the same and they will camp at Hvannadalshnjukur and keep their fingers crossed for good weather the following morning.
