There were no flights today from Punta Arenas so everyone enjoyed another day at the Union Glacier basecamp. Those who are continuing on to climb Vinson readied their kit and organized everything so that they are prepared to depart. Those who are returning to Punta Arenas repacked their gear and got ready for their departure, which may be tomorrow. There are plenty of interesting people at UG to keep everyone engaged. Interestingly there was a presentation tonight about the Scottish drink Irn Bru. Who would have guessed?
When the plane from Punta Arenas arrives it will be landing at the Union Glacier blue ice runway. This is a very unique feature and it's why the basecamp is where it is. A blue ice runway can only be made in areas where there is no net annual snow accumulation and it allows planes with wheels to land. Most other landing sites in Antarctica require planes to have skis. There are only 7 other blue ice runways in Antarctica.
Everyone is eating well, swapping photos and getting ready for the next leg of their journey. We'll keep you posted as we learn more so check back again tomorrow for another update from the ice.
